This week marks the start of the well known film festival, Gandules.  This takes place in the CCCB museum with a different theme each year.  This year’s theme is music in cinema and you can enjoy a variety of films where music is the principle protagonist.  With free entry, the festival is sure to draw a crowd; therefore it is recommendable to get there early.  It takes place on Tuesday’s, Wednesday’s and Thursday’s.  Like many festivals in Barcelona, the atmosphere is usually quite a laid back, relaxed one, making it the perfect option during the week if you’re looking for something light.  Further information on this event can be found at CCCB.

Esta semana marca el inicio del conocido festival de cine “Gandules”.  Tiene lugar en el CCCB, con un tema distinto cada año.  El tema de este año es la música en el cine, pudiendo disfrutar de una gran variedad de películas donde la música es la protagonista principal.  Seguramente irá mucha gente, ya que la entrada es gratis, por lo que es aconsejable llegar temprano. Se celebra los martes, miércoles y jueves de cada semana.  Igual que muchos festivales en Barcelona, el ambiente suele ser bastante tranquilo y relajado, convirtiéndose en la opción perfecta durante la semana si busca algo ligero.  Se puede encontrar más información sobre este evento en CCCB.

Summer is truly a glorious period to spend in Barcelona.  You can simply never get bored.  There is always something to do.  From concerts, festivals, to parties, to beach dates….you’ll always have something to keep you occupied.

Last week served as a perfect example of this with the start of “Sala Montjuic”, an outdoor film festival. Three films take place during the week on Monday’s, Wednesday’s and Friday’s and for just five euros you can sit on the grass in the grounds of the Montjuic Castle and enjoy the films.  The grounds have a capacity of up to 2,500 people and attracts many each year.

People often arrive with picnics, blankets or chairs so you can sit and enjoy the film, whilst having something to nibble on.  The setting for this event could not be better as you have great views of the sea in Barcelona from the castle.  In order to get there you can also take one of the free buses, which leave from 20.30 onwards from Plaza España.   Take a look on Sala Montjuic for further information about this event.

El verano es una época verdaderamente buena en Barcelona.  Nunca tendrán la oportunidad de aburrirse.  Siempre hay algo que hacer.  Con la selección de conciertos, festivales, fiestas y oportunidades de ir a la playa, siempre habrá algo para mantenerse entretenido.

Un buen ejemplo lo tenemos en el comienzo de la “Sala Montjuic”, un festival de películas al aire libre. Habrá tres películas cada semana, los lunes, miércoles y viernes.  Sólo hay que pagar una entrada de 5 euros para acceder a los terrenos del castillo de Montjuic, y sentarse o bien en el césped, o en las gandulas que alquila la organización.  El espacio tiene una capacidad de 2,500 personas, y cada año atrae a un gran número de asistentes.

Muchas veces la gente llega con picnics, mantas y sillas para poderse sentar y disfrutar de la película.  El escenario para este evento es inmejorable, con unas vistas muy buenas sobre la ciudad.  Durante la duración del festival habrá autobuses gratuitos desde Plaza España a partir de las 20.30 horas.  Mira Sala Montjuic para más información.

Continuing with our neighbourhood series, today we are going to take a look at “La Barceloneta”.  This area is traditionally a fishing neighbourhood and many of the apartments that are located here are narrow and small. This neighbourhood forms a triangular shape touching the Ribera neighbourhood, the Estación de Franca train station and the Puerto Olímpico or Olympic Port.

La Barceloneta, like many other neighbourhoods in Barcelona is full of charm.  You can easily lose yourself amongst its little, winding streets.  There is always something going on here, whether it is the local residents hanging out their washing from their balconies or kids playing in the streets to old people stopping to recount the latest news or to buskers playing in the vicinity.

With the beach nearby, la Barceloneta becomes even more alive during the summer.  Along its beaches you will be able to find lots of “chiringuitos” (little bars where music is often played) as well as other bars.  On the eve of Saint Joan, which takes place on the 24th of June each year, the crowds flock to the beaches near la Barceloneta as they join in the celebration of the festivities of one of the city’s patron saints.

In this area you will also be able to find restaurants which offer some of the best seafood in the city, and for those of you who are interested in a bit of culture; Catalonia’s History Museum is located here. The promenade along the beach and the Passeig Joan de Borbó are especially pleasant to go along for a stroll.  Sunday’s are also really lively days as you can enjoy a live band which usually plays near this museum.

If you venture a bit further away, you can also reach Port Vell, which connects you to Las Ramblas.  In Port Vell you will be able to find the Maremagnum shopping centre, the Aquarium and the IMAX theatre showing 3D films.  These are things, which provide a perfect outlet on rainy days.

This is definitely an area not to be missed in Barcelona and is well worth a visit.

Continuando con nuestra serie sobre los barrios de Barcelona, hoy vamos a echar un vistazo a la Barceloneta.  Tradicionalmente, este barrio ha sido un barrio de pescadores, y muchos de los pisos que se encuentran aquí son estrechos y pequeños. Este barrio forma un triángulo, tocando al barrio de la Ribera, la estación de Francia y el Puerto Olímpico.

La Barceloneta, como otros barrios de Barcelona, está llena de encanto. Uno puede perderse fácilmente entre sus callejuelas mientras contempla a los vecinos tendiendo la ropa de su balcón, a los niños  jugando por la calle, a los mayores que se reúnen en las plazas para contar las últimas novedades, o a músicos callejeros que tocan en las inmediaciones.

Dado que la playa esta cerquita, la Barceloneta cobra aun más vida en verano.  Por sus playas se puede encontrar muchos chiringuitos y bares.  En la víspera del 24 de junio, día de Sant Joan, la gente se dirige a las playas para celebrar la verbena, uno de los festejos  más tradicionales de la ciudad.  

En este barrio se encuentran algunos de los restaurantes que ofrecen el mejor marisco de la ciudad.  Para aquellos que tienen interés en la cultura, aquí está ubicado el museo de Historia de Cataluña. El paseo a lo largo de la playa (passeig marítim) y el Passeig Joan de Borbó son especialmente agradables para dar un paseo.  Los domingos también son bastante animados. Entre otras actividades, se puede disfrutar de un grupo en vivo que suele tocar al lado del museo.

Si se aventuran un poco más allá, llegarán al Port Vell, que se comunica con Las Ramblas.  En el Port Vell se encuentra el centro comercial Maremagnum, el Aquarium y el teatro IMAX, que estrena películas en 3D.  Puede ser muy útil tener en cuenta estos lugares en días de lluvia.

La Barceloneta es un barrio de Barcelona que no se pueden perder, y que realmente vale la pena visitar.

If you are visiting Barcelona, then we highly recommend that you take a trip to Montjuic, which is both a neighbourhood and a mountain. In this area, you can find various buildings, in which the Olympic Games of 1992 took place.  You can also find the Palau Sant Jordi, in which many shows and events take place, as well as the Poble Espanyol, an enclosed area which is full of typical streets and buildings of various Spanish communities.  This is particularly directed towards tourists, as there are many bars, restaurants and shops, as well as various flamenco shows.

For all of the culture buffs out there, you can also visit one of the many museums which are located in the area, such as the Fundación Joan Miró, the CaixaFòrum museum, the MNAC or National Art Museum of Catalonia, the ethnological museum of Barcelona, as well as the museum of the castle of Montjuic and the historical botanic gardens.  Therefore, you can easily spend more than a day in this area alone, taking in the various sites and museums.

Currently in the Fundació Miró, you can find an interesting exhibition by Kiki Smith, which is entitled; “Kiki Smith.  Her Memory”.  This American artist, who was born in Nuremberg, Germany, is very well known, especially in New York, where much of her work has been exhibited in the MOMA.  She is also considered to be quite opinionated when it comes to feminist issues, as well as being outspoken on other issues such as race and AIDS. 

This exhibition focuses on women, and their life cycle, from birth to death.  It touches on various processes that happen in between such as growing up and achievement.  As in previous work, there are references to the Virgin Mary and other mythical figures.

What makes this exhibition even more interesting is the fact that it is conveyed through various forms such as sculpture, drawings, paintings and stained glass.  Further information can be found on the above link.

Si está visitando Barcelona, le recomendamos que haga un viaje a Montjuic, que da nombre a un barrio y a una montaña.  En este barrio se pueden encontrar varios escenarios en los que tuvieron lugar los juegos olímpicos de 1992.  También se puede encontrar el Palau Sant Jordi, donde suele haber espectáculos y eventos, y el Poble Español, que es un área cerrada que reproduce fielmente edificios y callejuelas típicos de las varias comunidades autónomas españolas. También tiene bares, restaurantes, tiendas y espectáculos de flamenco, que suelen ser muy populares entre los turistas.

Para todos los aficionados a la cultura, se puede visitar algunos de los museos que están ubicados en la zona, como la Fundación Joan Miró, el museo CaixaFòrum, el MNAC o el museo etnológico de Barcelona, así como el museo del castillo de Montjuic y los jardines botánicos históricos.  Por lo tanto, se puede necesitar fácilmente más de un día para visitar todos estos lugares.

Actualmente se estrena una interesante exposición en la Fundació Miró, que se llama; “Kiki Smith: su memoria”.  La artista americana nació en Nuremberg, Alemania y es bastante conocida, especialmente en Nueva York, sitio donde se ha estrenado gran parte de su obra, concretamente en el MOMA.  Es conocida por sus opiniones personales sobre temas feministas y sobre otros temas como la raza y el SIDA.

La exposición está enfocada en las mujeres y su ciclo de vida, desde el nacimiento hasta la muerte.  Trata de varios procesos que ocurren en dicho ciclo, como el crecimiento y la realización de las metas personales. Como en su obra previa, hay referencias a la Virgen María y otras figuras míticas.

Una cosa que distingue a esta exposición es el hecho de que se expresa en varias formas, como esculturas, dibujos, pinturas y vidrio de color.  Se puede consultar más información en el enlace de arriba.

Today sees the start of the Formula 1 in Barcelona.  Anyone who is familiar with Spain and its culture will know that they have quite an obsession with sports.  Grand Prix Car racing is no different as the famous Spaniard Fernando Alonso, who was crowned World Champion in 2006 is completely revered here. 

The “Circuit of Catalunya” will take place during three days. It will take place in the village of Montmeló, which is located 20km to the north of Barcelona and plays host not only to Formula 1 racing, but also to the “Gran Premio de Cataluña de Motociclismo” (the Catalonian Grand Prize for Motorcycle racing).

Hoy marca la inauguración de la Formula 1 en Barcelona.  Cualquier persona que esté familiarizada con España y su cultura sabrá que tienen una obsesión con el deporte.  Este fin de semana no es una excepción, ya que tiene lugar el circuito en el cual participará  el conocido Fernando Alonso, quien fue coronado el campeón mundial en 2006 y que es totalmente venerado aquí.

El “Circuito de Cataluña” tendrá lugar durante tres días. Se celebrará en el pueblo de Montmeló, ubicado unos 20km al norte de Barcelona y que recibe no solo la Formula 1 sino también el “Gran Premio de Cataluña de Motociclismo”.

The city is alive today as it celebrates el día de Sant Jordi (St.George’s Day).  Saint Jordi is the Patron Saint of Catalonia, and on this day Catalan flags are to be found throughout the city. It is considered by some to be the equivalent of St.Valentine’s Day.  The atmosphere is fantastic as Las Ramblas and streets across Barcelona are filled with stands with people selling books and roses.  Beautiful roses of many colours ranging from blue to red and yellow are sold throughout the city.  On this day it is a tradition that between loved ones, roses are given to the women and books to the men. 

It’s quite a nice tradition as people smile and come alive in the city.  Those of you visiting will be pleasantly surprised with this event. falls when the summer season is really getting into swing.  Check out Sant Jordi for more information on this day and its traditions.

La ciudad cobra vida hoy para celebrar la díada de Sant Jordi.  San Jordi es el patrón de Cataluña, y durante este día se pueden encontrar banderas de Cataluña por toda la ciudad.  Algunos consideran este día como el equivalente al día de San Valentín.  Hay muy buen ambiente principalmente en Las Ramblas, y también en otras calles de Barcelona, ya que están llenas de puestos que venden rosas y libros.  Se venden rosas preciosas de muchos colores como el rojo, azul y amarillo.  En este día es tradición que entre parejas, se regala una rosa a las mujeres y un libro a los hombres.

For those of you interested in Asian, and more specifically, in Chinese culture, you should take a trip to Casa Asia to see the current exhibition, “China.  Retrato de un país (1949-2008)”; (China. Portrait of a country (1949-2008).  In recent years, China has been converted into one of the world’s most powerful economies.  Chinese immigrants are to be found in countries the world over. The influence of their culture and food is such that many cities are now claiming their very own “Chinatown”. The number of people learning Chinese in the world has increased from roughly 25 million in 2004 to 40 million in 2009, with people acknowledging the promising future that China holds.

This exhibition documents China’s history, from the complicated period of 1949 until present day China.  We are presented with images of village occurrences in China, which today are recognized as real historic events. Running in conjunction with this, are various films under the title, “China: a century of Revolution”.  Entry to the exhibition is free and will run until the 17^th of May.  You can find further information about this exhibition on the link above.

Aquellos que estén interesados en la cultura asiática y más específicamente en la cultura china, deberían hacer una visita a la Casa Asia para ver la exposición de “China.  Retrato de un país (1949-2008)”.  En los últimos años China se ha convertido en una de las economías más poderosas del mundo.  Se puede encontrar inmigrantes de China en todos los países del mundo.  La influencia de su cultura y comida es tal que muchas ciudades están reclamando su propia “Chinatown”. La cantidad de gente que está aprendiendo chino en el mundo ha aumentado de aproximadamente 25 millones en 2004 a 40 millones en 2009, ya que mucha gente reconoce el futuro prometedor que tiene China.

Esta exposición documenta la historia de China desde el complicado período de 1949 hasta la China de hoy en día.  Se nos presentan imágenes de lo que sucedía en los pueblos de China, que hoy en día están reconocidas como verdaderos acontecimientos históricos.  Además, se presenta una serie de películas bajo el título “China: un siglo de revolución”.  La admisión a esta exposición es gratuita, y tendrá lugar hasta el 17 de mayo.  Se puede consultar más información en el enlace de arriba.

Tennis fans and more specifically fans of Rafa Nadal are currently flocking to Barcelona as the World Champion takes part in the “Open Sabadell Atlántico”, previously known as the “Open Seat Godo”.  It is taking place in the “Real Club de Tenis Barcelona”, having begun on the 18^th of April.  It will run until the 26^th  of this month.  Nadal made his debut in this tournament when he was just 16 years of age; therefore it is obviously something special for him to take part in the tournament.  He has succeeded in winning the prize in the previous four years, making this his attempt at five years in a row.

The prize for winning this competition is the handsome sum of €1,995,000.  Recently, the 1997 winner of this tournament and the current Davis Cup captain, Albert Costa, was appointed as director of the tournament.  This event is sure to be a highly entertaining one.  Further information can be found at Open Sabadell Atlantico.

Los fans del tenis y más concretamente del tenista mallorquín Rafa Nadal tienen su próxima cita en Barcelona, ya que el campeón mundial toma parte en el “Open Sabadell Atlántico”, anteriormente conocido como el “Open Seat Godo”.  Se celebra en el Real Club Tenis Barcelona. Empezó el 18 de abril y tendrá lugar hasta el 26 de abril.  Nadal debutó en este torneo cuando tenía sólo 16 años.  Entonces, el continuar participando es algo especial para él.  Ha ganado el premio en los últimos cuatro años, y este año intentará añadir el quinto a la lista.

El premio por ganar el concurso es de 1,995,000€.  Hace poco, el ganador del torneo en 1997 y el actual capitán de la Copa Davis, Albert Costa, fue nombrado como el nuevo director.  Este evento seguramente será muy entretenido.  Se puede consultar más información en Open Sabadell Átlantico.

 For those of you who are sick of hearing the word “crisis” (recession), which is mentioned more times in one day by people, the media etc., than I care to imagine, this weekend will provide you with the perfect opportunity to forget about it, as the “Saló internacional del turisme” (the international tourism salon) takes place.  Yes, that’s right.   This weekend is all about lapping it up and enjoying yourselves as the world is your oyster.

This event will be divided into four different themes.  They are, the “Mad Traveller’s Routes.  A new form of travelling”, the “Special Offer zone-how to travel in times of crisis?”, the “Porta del Desert” (the door to the Desert) and the “Camping zone for nature lovers”.  These areas are sure to provide something for everyone, as they cater for the more adventurous, to the more family oriented holiday.

In the “Porta del Desert” section, there will be a range of activities for the holiday maker to see.  Things include Belly Dancing, Henna tattoos, contortionists and live music.  It is sure to be quite entertaining, especially as Arabic countries have recently become more popular holiday destinations for native Catalans.

Para aquellos que están hartos de oír la palabra “crisis”, mencionada por la gente y los medios de comunicación más veces en un día de los que se pueda imaginar, este fin de semana tienen la oportunidad perfecta para olvidarse de ella, ya que se celebra el “Saló internacional del turisme”.  ¡Sí, es correcto!  Este fin de semana es para descansar y disfrutar del tiempo libre, con todos los lugares del mundo a su alcance.

Este evento estará divido en cuatro temas distintos.  Son las “Rutas Mad-Travelers, nuevas experiencias”, el “Área de ofertas, cómo viajar en tiempos de crisis”, la “Porta del Desert, turismo del desierto”, y el “Área Vacaciones/Camping, para los amantes de la Naturaleza”.  Estas áreas seguramente proporcionarán algo interesante a cada persona, porque documenta desde las vacaciones más aventureras hasta las que están más enfocadas a la familia.

En la sección de la “Porta del Desert”, habrá una gran variedad de actividades para ver.  Algunas de ellas incluyen la Danza del vientre, los tatuajes de Henna, contorsionistas y música en vivo.  Seguramente será muy entretenido, especialmente porque actualmente los países árabes están muy de moda entre los catalanes.

For those of you who have come to Barcelona to party, you may need to know the best places to get “hangover food”.  Las Ramblas provides a haven for those who are looking for soakage as there are fast food outlets serving pizza, baguettes and pastries.  Barcelona is also abundant in kebab shops, which are always busy, especially in the early hours of the morning.

If you are a lover of fish and chips, you will be happy to know that a new fish and chips restaurant has opened on the Rambla del Raval.  For those of you who are more inclined towards a bag of chips with salt and vinegar, this is the place for you. Its proprietors are English, serving you the very best of English grub as you will also find dishes such as steak and kidney pie or chicken and mushroom pie, fish cakes, burgers, as well as a full breakfast menu, which is served all day long.  Cheap and cheerful, this is one place that you will be glad to have visited.

If you are looking for a more Spanish take on hangover food, then the rich “Chocolate con Churros” (horn shaped doghnuts, which are dipped into a thick hot chocolate) are readily consumed.  This is sure to satisfy your taste buds as it is sweet and savoury all in the one.

Para aquellos que vienen a Barcelona para vivir la noche, quizás les haría falta conocer los mejores sitios para tomar un buen desayuno después de la fiesta. Las Ramblas proporciona muchos de estos lugares: muchos puntos de venta sirven pizza, bocadillos y bollos.  Barcelona también tiene una gran variedad de tiendas de Kebab y casi siempre están muy concurridas, especialmente durante la madrugada. 

Si es amante de los fish and chips (pescado con patatas fritas), estará contento de saber que hay un nuevo restaurante especializando en la Rambla del Raval.  También es un buen lugar para aquellos a los que les gusta más una buena ración de patatas fritas con sal y vinagre. Sus propietarios son ingleses y sirven lo mejor de la comida inglesa.  También se puede encontrar tales cosas como el pastel de carne y riñones, el pastel de pollo y champiñones, croquetas de pescado o hamburguesas, y un menú de desayuno que se sirve durante todo el día.  Es un sitio barato y alegre que merece la pena visitar.

Si le apetece comer algo más español, los conocidos “Chocolate con Churros” serán una buena opción, y a mucha gente les gusta.  Seguramente satisfará su paladar, porque es salado y dulce a la vez.
